Verify the Business Outside the Message

A familiar hotel name, logo or polished social-media page does not prove who controls an account. Before paying for a Cebu hotel, resort, agency or tour, find the business through an independent official channel and ask whether the offer, booking reference, contact person and payment recipient are genuinely theirs.

DOT Region 7's Turista iWAS Scam campaign documented cloned social accounts and websites impersonating legitimate tourism businesses in Cebu and Bohol. Do not verify a suspicious message by calling the number or opening the link inside that same message. For accommodation, also check that the location fits your route with the Cebu area guide, then confirm the booking with the independently located business contact.

Pause When the Payment Details Change

Stop and recheck when a seller creates unusual urgency, offers a price far below a plausible total, unexpectedly changes the receiving account or asks for payment to a personal bank or e-wallet name. A personal account is a warning signal, not automatic proof of fraud, so the useful response is independent verification rather than accusation.

Search the business and, for a boat tour, the relevant transport provider in the official DOT accreditation system. Match the name, address and contact details rather than trusting a similar name. Accreditation shows that a tourism enterprise has met DOT minimum standards where applicable, but it cannot authenticate every message or guarantee a trouble-free transaction. Before paying, save the quoted total, inclusions, cancellation terms, recipient and the business's confirmation.

Act Quickly After a Suspicious Payment

Do not send more money, passwords or OTPs. Contact the bank, card issuer or e-wallet immediately through its official app, website or published number and ask about the appropriate dispute or account-protection steps; no recovery outcome is guaranteed.

Preserve the page or profile URL, username, date and time, full conversation, payment instruction, recipient details, booking confirmation and transaction receipt without editing the originals. Report through current official CICC, police and, where relevant, DOT channels, checking their live contact details before use. The DOT-7 public guidance explains the verification and reporting approach. Keep passport images, complete account numbers and booking codes out of public posts.
