Bantayan or Malapascua for Your Cebu Holiday

Choose Bantayan for a beach-led holiday with Santa Fe as the ferry gateway, room for island touring and a vehicle-capable RoRo option. Choose Malapascua when diving is the main reason for travel and a smaller passenger-banca transfer is acceptable. Both require a long northbound journey and several nights; they use different mainland ports and are not interchangeable side trips.

Bantayan suits travelers who want white-sand shores, shallow coastal scenery and land exploration beyond the beach. Santa Fe is the main arrival and leisure base, while Bantayan municipality is a separate western town with church and mangrove heritage. Malapascua also has beaches, but its clearest distinction is repeated dive days around sites named by Daanbantayan Tourism. Wildlife sightings, including thresher sharks, remain unpredictable.

For a short holiday, choose one island. Plan to travel via the mainland because no current official direct public island-to-island service is published, and allow a transfer day if combining both.

Different Ports, Boats and Journey Times

For Bantayan, travel from Cebu North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio, take the ferry to Santa Fe, then continue locally. The Cebu Province Bantayan guide estimates about four to five hours in total. Passenger ferries and a RoRo option make Bantayan the clearer choice for a vehicle or heavier family luggage, subject to securing the appropriate slot.

For Malapascua, travel from the same city terminal to Maya Port in Daanbantayan, then take a passenger banca to Logon. The official Daanbantayan guide estimates four to five hours for the road leg alone, before boat waiting and crossing. Smaller-boat boarding makes dry bags, compact packing and advance luggage questions more useful.

Never send Bantayan passengers to Maya or Malapascua passengers to Hagnaya. Confirm current authorized sailings, total fees, luggage handling and landing arrangements for the travel date. Weather and port decisions govern both crossings.

Choose by Stay Style and Risk Tolerance

On Bantayan, stay around Santa Fe for ferry convenience and beach time, then explore farther if desired. Holy Week attracts large numbers of pilgrims and visitors, so the island should not be described as permanently quiet. On Malapascua, choose accommodation around the dive operator, boat meeting point and actual landing or beach access. Early dive patterns may matter more than nightlife or room size.

Bantayan is generally the easier fit for a mixed-age beach holiday, extensive luggage or travelers bringing a vehicle. Malapascua fits experienced and beginner divers who are prepared to organize operator requirements and accept that sea conditions can alter plans. These are relative strengths: Bantayan also has water activities, and non-divers can enjoy Malapascua.

Three nights is a practical minimum for many visitors once the northbound journey is counted, while four or more gives greater weather flexibility. Divers should confirm certification, equipment, medical requirements and meeting times before choosing a Malapascua room. Bantayan travelers bringing a vehicle should secure the RoRo arrangement and check whether the accommodation offers parking; foot passengers should still plan the ride from Santa Fe port.

Allow at least several nights so the travel day earns its place in the itinerary. Return to the mainland a day before an important early flight if disruption would be costly. Neither island is guaranteed empty, cheap or calm. Choose Bantayan when sand and island touring lead the decision; choose Malapascua when diving, a compact small-island rhythm and the more involved smaller-boat transfer process justify the extra connection margin.
