Philippine Olympic Committee Appeals for Inclusion of Key Sports in 2025 SEA Games
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has formally appealed to the organizers of the 2025 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand to reinstate four sports—weightlifting, wushu, karate, and jiu-jitsu—that were recently removed from the competition lineup. These disciplines have historically been strongholds for Filipino athletes, contributing significantly to the country's medal tally in previous editions of the Games.
POC President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino emphasized the importance of these sports, noting that their exclusion could adversely affect the Philippines' overall performance. He highlighted that other neighboring countries share similar concerns and have joined the appeal for their reinstatement.
During the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, Filipino athletes excelled in these disciplines, with notable performances from Vanessa Sarno and Elreen Ando in weightlifting, Agatha Wong in wushu, and Jamie Lim in karate. Their achievements underscored the country's prowess and the potential impact of excluding these events from future competitions
The POC remains hopeful that the SEA Games Federation and the Thai organizing committee will reconsider their decision, ensuring that athletes have the opportunity to compete in their respective sports and continue the tradition of excellence that has been established over the years.
